Roping, Healing, and Brotherhood

Roping, Healing, and Brotherhood: The Lasting Impact of the Liberty and Loyalty Foundation

When military members, veterans, and first responders step into the arena at the Liberty and Loyalty Foundation’s Horns N’ Heroes Team Roping Clinic, they come for the horsemanship—but leave with so much more.

For participants like Lane Blake, the experience was life-changing: “Not only did it change my roping, it tremendously impacted my spiritual life… the camaraderie, love for Country, and the western way of life is unrivaled.” For Lane and so many others, the arena becomes a space of personal growth, healing, and reconnection.

The Horns N’ Heroes Clinic, held this year on November 5–6, 2025, at the NRS Arena in Decatur, Texas, is open to eight headers and eight heelers from the military and first responder community. Taught by Charly Crawford and Trey Johnson – both known for their elite skills and even bigger hearts – this clinic combines top-level roping instruction with powerful personal support. It’s more than a clinic; it’s a family.

Participants go on to rope and spectate at elite events following the clinic, culminating with the Imus Ranch NFR Showdown at the historic Cowtown Coliseum in Fort Worth on November 9. And for many, this weekend becomes a touchstone for a new season in life.

Kevin Schwartz, a retired police officer, joined the clinic after unimaginable personal loss. “I came filled with anxiety and the desire to impress,” he says, “but I left with a brotherhood of solidarity and personal revelation that is guiding me toward healing and gratitude.”

Millie Schmidt, a veteran and clinic alum, brought the experience back to Missouri where she works with other veterans and first responders. “I came home different. I brought back lessons in leadership, growth, and healing… and I didn’t just bring them back for me – I brought them back for my people.”

These stories are not rare – they’re the heartbeat of the Liberty and Loyalty Foundation. From building lifelong friendships to rediscovering purpose outside of service, participants consistently describe the event as one of the most meaningful experiences of their lives.

Applications to be part of the 2025 clinic open June 1 and close June 15. A limited number of spots are available, and applicants must provide proof of service along with a valid ID. Acceptance letters will go out July 1, with a fully refundable deposit required to confirm participation.

As past participant Brian Bolick puts it, “This organization gave me a purpose outside of policing… it brought me into a world that has become a part of my life.” And Janie Brown, who applied after watching her husband attend, added, “The support from HNH alumni makes you feel like you’re family from the second you step into the arena.”

If you’re a veteran or first responder looking for connection, challenge, healing, and the support of a growing western family—this is your invitation.

Welcome to the arena. Welcome to the family.
